July 7, 2026 — Ripio today announced the launch of its full wFIAT stablecoin suite on Celo, bringing six Latin American local-currency stablecoins to one of the most widely adopted blockchains for stablecoin payments.
wARS, wBRL, wMXN, wCOP, wPEN, and wCLP are now available on Celo, giving developers and protocols access to the Argentine peso, Brazilian real, Mexican peso, Colombian peso, Peruvian sol, and Chilean peso — all fully collateralized 1:1 and backed by reserves held at regulated financial institutions.

Why Celo
Celo is the leading programmable rails for global finance, facilitating fast, low-cost global payments since launching on mainnet Earth Day 2020. The network is uniquely positioned for stablecoin-powered cross-border payments, B2B transfers, foreign exchange, and remittances with fee abstraction (ability to pay gas fees with stablecoins), sub-cent transaction costs, and 1-second block time. With over 400,000 daily active users and a significant user base in Latin America, Celo’s infrastructure and ecosystem are equally well positioned for strong adoption of Ripio’s wFIAT stablecoins.
"Celo is a key partner for Ripio, bringing our stablecoins to a developer community that's been building payments infrastructure for years,"
Fermin Rodriguez, Head of Product at Ripio.
“Local currency stablecoins have been a core focus of the Celo ecosystem since the beginning, with our first Latin American currency launch going back to 2022 to unlock savings, spending, and additional real-world use cases that truly benefit users in their everyday lives. Ripio has delivered on that same thesis at scale across Latin America, introducing the benefits of onchain finance to millions. Bringing wFIAT to Celo is a key unlock for the ecosystem’s growing onchain FX, remittance corridors, and more.”
Dr. Markus Franke, Global Head of Stablecoins at Celo Core Co.
Already in Production
Early partners are already integrating wFIAT on Celo, including crosschain FX liquidity network Textile FX, which supports wARS (Argentine peso) and wBRS (Brazilian real) FX trading today. Developers building payment apps, remittance products, and DeFi protocols can now price, settle, and hold positions in local currencies without forcing users through dollar conversions.
Technical Details
The tokens are available across Celo's DeFi ecosystem, with liquidity providers and protocol integrators testing flows ahead of broader rollouts.

All six wFIAT tokens are ERC-20 compatible and deployed on Celo mainnet:
Each token is backed 1:1 by domestic reserves, independently attested by local auditors. Ripio operates under regulatory licenses across Argentina, Brazil, and other key Latin American markets.

What This Means for Builders
Developers can now build applications that let users transact in the currencies they actually use. A DeFi protocol can offer peso-denominated lending. A payments app can settle cross-border transactions in Brazilian Reals without touching USDT. A remittance product can pay out directly in local currency on-chain.
Celo adds mobile-optimized infrastructure and a community that's been working on real-world payments since day one.
